For many years across our movement, the month of January has been a return to the basics of our teaching. Using The Science of Mind by Dr. Ernest Holmes, our various communities study the first four chapters as a way of getting back to basics: The Thing Itself, The Way it Works, What it Does, How to Use It.

Of all the words for Divinity I have encountered, The Thing Itself may be my favorite. It has helped me to step back from ideas I learned in childhood and to think more deeply about what “It” is to me now. I particularly appreciate how Dr. Holmes approached the study of spirituality as something practical and natural, encouraging his readers to explore and experiment with their own thinking.
In the weeks that follow, as part of our year-long focus on Values Based Spiritual Living, we will be considering the question, how do I define spiritual living. Here is what Dr. Ernest Holmes wrote about spirituality:
Spirituality may be defined as an atmosphere of good, the realization of God. It cannot—and does not—borrow its light from another, no matter how great or noble that other may be. It springs from within, coming from that never-failing fountain of life, which quenches every thirst, whose Source is in eternity; the well-spring of self-existence. It is a revelation of the self to the self, putting one back on the track of his own self-dependence on Spirit, his own at-one-ment with Reality.
How do you define your spirituality?
